Intuitive is a pioneer in creating robotic-assisted, minimally invasive surgical systems. We optimized their Customer Portal web experience to help robotics coordinators manage programs efficiently.

The Ask

The Customer Portal exists to help robotics coordinators manage their robotics programs’ system utilization and routine maintenance. It’s also a tool to plan and forecast system and inventory purchases.

Our redesign focused on improving the usability of the Portal’s core product features, automating and elevating instrument utilization insights, and adding functionality to make robotics coordinators’ jobs easier. We also extended Intuitive’s Design System to bring cohesion between this experience and other product touchpoints.

 

 

Maximizing program efficiency

One of the most important aspects of the Portal is to provide robotics coordinators insights into ways they can maximize program utilization and minimize downtime. We explored how existing data visualizations could be easier to digest, compare, and interact with. We developed a series of graphs and charts with multi-level interactions and motion concepts for user testing.

 

 

From design to code

Throughout the design review process, we partnered with our internal development team to test and prototype interaction ideas. The prototypes validated technical feasibility, animation concepts, and overall usability. We leveraged progressive disclosure, one of Intuitive’s core brand experience principles, to reduce unnecessary noise and present only the most important information in the moment.

 
 

 

Optimizing core flows

Our work was equally focused on optimizing core page templates and core flows in the Customer Portal, such as how to return or exchange an instrument or accessory. We reorganized how information is grouped; brought transparency to what documents are needed on hand, and created easier ways for robotics coordinators to input and select models based on smarter input field searching.

Redesigning the Customer Portal was a challenging, collaborative effort to create a better experience for robotics coordinators. We left Intuitive with a series of redesigned templates, optimized flows, a refined approach to data visualization, and coded prototypes for their team to continue pressure-testing and evolving.
